T WAS Spring? Somewhere around 1992. After five glorious days at Pineapple Beach Antigua, Gary and I were standing on the pier waiting for transport to the Windstar—for our first ever cruise, when I heard Fritzi’s signature whistle calling me to pay attention! how could that be?—my mom was in her apartment in NYC! I whipped around and saw this distinguished gent whistling our special code.

“You’re not my mother!” I admonished him.

Not batting an eyebrow,” You’re not my wife!” he declared.

We cracked up right there on the pier–and at that very moment along came this gorgeous lady calling out “No but I am!”

After transport to the ship and a moment of wonder at being on a new adventure, we all agreed to meet for drinks and our first dinner “at sea”.

Stanley and Marcia (and Carol and Jerry—who Stanley had (typically) picked up earlier in the day) and Gary and I dined together for the first time that evening—and we never stopped laughing, dining, cruising, and sharing family and travel and work and play stories to this day.

In my heart we never will.
