I first met Walter during the academic year 1974-1975 when I was a junior at Barnard College, interested in all things medieval and majoring in art history. Columbia University had invited him to give graduate lectures on Romanesque sculpture, as Professor Branner had recently passed away, and I took the course. I followed him on to Yale for my graduate studies, writing my PhD thesis under his direction (1982). I also studied Islamic art with Annabelle. Walter had a truly encyclopedic knowledge, which he shared generously. Modesty and humility enhanced his brilliance. A sense of humor and wit animated his conversations. He made an enormous impact on the course of my intellectual life. May his memory be for a blessing.

In 1968 Professor Robert Branner at Columbia University characterized Walter Cahn to me as a rising star in the field of Medieval Art. In fact Walter became one of the great scholars of Medieval Art in our generation; he was also a wonderful and caring colleague. I am very sorry to hear of his death and I shall miss him greatly.
